Energy Efficiency Tips

Electricity

There are some simple ways/suggestions to save on electricity and they do not require so much time and effort:

  • You can potentially reduce your energy bill by £50 if you switch off appliances at the wall rather than leaving them on standby.
  • You can potentially save £37/year if you use energy saving bulbs and switch off the lights not in use at the property.
  • Buy new appliances with a high-energy efficiency rating – See a guide to energy rating labels.

Heating

  • You can potentially save £80/year by turning down the thermostat by 1 degree
  • Ensure the radiators have enough space to heat up the rooms. You can move the furniture around to help with circulation of heat
  • Close curtains to keep heat in the property
  • Use towels to serve as draught excluders under doors
  • Cover windows with cling film and bubble wrap – simple way of double glazing
  • Please Note: do not block specific openings in your home that are meant for ventilation
  • Wash your clothes at 30°C or cooler There are easy solutions to keep your warm air in and the cold air out, meaning less energy needed to heat your home.
  • Use the economy cycle and try as much as possible to wash full loads.
  • Avoid leaving the hot water tap on for a long period
  • Limit the use of the tumble dryer whenever possible

Take advantage of help available The government often has schemes available to help you make energy efficient repairs and tackle the big jobs like wall and loft insulation.
